I found a story over at Joystiq that says the new 80GB PS3's will have the chip that European PS3's have which will indeed have limited backward compatibility. I just don't see why Sony would make this move. Backward compatibility is a huge feature the PS3 has over XBox 360 right now, and they're essentially putting themselves neck and neck in terms of this feature.

The ones on the market right now are. There is talk of Sony removing the backwards compatability chip in the future here in the U.S. to cut the price but it hasn't happened yet. With the recent price drop, I don't think it would be a wise move because the PS2 library is so extensive.
